Cinnamon, especially Ceylon, offers numerous health benefits, including regulating blood sugar, reducing inflammation, and supporting the immune system.
Cinnamon, a very common spice in cooking, is used to add a sweeter and spicier flavour to food.
Did you know there are different types of cinnamon available?
There are actually two types: Cassia and Ceylon, which generally come from different species of plants and different geographical regions. Cassia is the most common type, which you can also find at the supermarket, and is generally the cheaper option. If you find it organic, it’s better. Otherwise, it may have very little nutritional value.
Ceylon cinnamon can be found in some organic stores, herbal shops, or online. Unlike Cassia, it has a sweeter and more delicate flavour, as well as a lighter colour. Between the two, if you can, choose Ceylon because it has significantly higher nutritional quality.
Cinnamon: Properties and Indications
Cinnamon has numerous beneficial properties, especially if you suffer from:
- Insulin resistance
- Diabetes or blood sugar imbalances
- Cardiovascular issues
- Obesity/metabolic syndrome/inflammatory states
Additionally,
- It helps regulate blood sugar levels → a natural hypoglycemic when added to food
- It helps regulate blood pressure
- It reduces insulin resistance
- It has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and generally supports the immune system.
However, be careful! Cassia, if taken in large quantities or over long periods, can be toxic to the liver due to the presence of coumarin (which is present in smaller amounts in Ceylon cinnamon).
But how to use it?
If I could, I would put it practically everywhere because I love it 🙂 but I limit myself to:
- Yoghurt
- Porridge
- Sprinkling on fresh fruit, pancakes, plant-based milk, smoothies
- In coffee
Highly recommended for everyone! → Super delicious!!
